A La Gomera

La Gomera, is one of the least known and oldest of the Canary Islands, a magical, unspoiled sub-tropical island with winter sun, mountainous verdant scenery and gorgeous views.

The Island

The views on the drives and walks into the island, over the verdant terraces lined with date palms and scattered with beautiful, white-stone dwellings are both breath-taking and tranquil. The small town nestles at the foot of the Barrancaâ among the banana plantations, surrounded by the rolling waves of the ocean lapping on the beaches.

All is surrounded by the magnificent stillness of the mountain that forms La Gomera. Watching the sunset from the bars and beaches at the end of the day, the whole sky becomes a stunning display of golds, reds, purples and oranges, reflected on the ocean. Unlike the more commercial Tenerife, La Gomera is a magical setting, where eco-tourism is integrated into the local community and there is a lively, alternative scene to explore.

Accommodation and costs

We have local based agents who can arrange delightful self catering apartments from about €35-50 per night. Apartments sleep from 2- 6 persons depending on size. The dolphin boat trips cost around €40 per person per trip with discounts for children. We can assist you with all the arrangements and make a small booking fee. The flights vary enormously depending on when you travel. We can advise you on the best offers to Tenerife south from where you take a ferry to la Gomera ( 1 – 2 hours). We can also arrange accommodation at a retreat centre which is fully catered costing around €50 per person per night.

Climate

La Gomera has a constant climate all year round with consistent sunshine. Temperatures generally range from 20°-34°C, depending on the season. The sea is warmed from Africa, with a warm breeze from the Sahara. We go in our wintertime to avoid the very high temperatures. We stay in traditional Spanish-style self-catering apartments, which are situated 15 minutes walk from the harbour and beaches.

There are plenty of places nearby to buy provisions of all kinds at all hours. The apartments have a spacious balcony with views to the sea and are very comfortable, quiet and clean. They offer either one or two double or twin bedrooms with a lounge (with sofa-bed) and en-suite bathroom. The design and the position ensures a cooling breeze and the window-views are filled with the mountains, date palms and banana plantations. The balconies and the roof terrace are the perfect place to watch the sun setting over the sea in all its glory.

Other Activities on the Island

There are an abundance of walks in the mountains and waterfalls. Hire of mountain bikes and cars are cheap to go sightseeing in the dramatic and breathtaking scenery. The local foreign community offers a wide range of massage and relaxation treatments for those wanting to unwind even more. There are even yoga and dance classes available.
